Learn Reiki in Japan: Practice, Tradition and What to Expect
Learning Reiki in Japan can bring the practice into a wider cultural context. Here is what to consider when choosing a course, and how we approach our Reiki Mastery journey at Kisetsu.

In the midst of daily noise and demands, there are moments when something inside us longs for silence. A pause. A different way of inhabiting the body, the present, and life itself. For many, that moment marks the beginning of their path with Reiki.
In this article, I’ll share what you can find in a Reiki course, what it’s like to experience it in Barcelona, and how this door can also open through an online Reiki course.
A Reiki course is not just training. It is a deep experience that touches subtle layers of our perception, our sensitivity, and our way of relating to life.
Reiki, which originated in Japan in the early 20th century and has both Buddhist and Shinto roots, is a simple yet profound practice that supports the body’s self-regulation and emotional balance. In a Reiki course, you don’t just learn a technique — you begin a practice.
And that’s exactly what many people are looking for today: a practice that allows them to come home to themselves, care for themselves with respect, and reconnect with their vital energy.
Despite its fast pace, Barcelona holds small oases — places where time seems to slow down and it becomes possible to listen again. At Kisetsu, Reiki & Meditation School, we’ve been offering Reiki courses for years in quiet, carefully curated spaces that honor the Japanese tradition of this practice.
Our Reiki courses in Barcelona are in-person, intimate, and held in small groups. During the weekend of the Level 1 course (Shoden), we explore not only the practice but also the principles that sustain it: care, presence, respect.
Each course includes moments of theory, hands-on practice, meditation, and reflection. But above all, it is about the experience — what happens inside you when you allow yourself to feel.
This is a common question: can an online Reiki course be truly transformative?
The answer is yes — provided the course is well designed and guided by someone who understands that this is not just about sharing information, but about creating a space for genuine experience.
At Kisetsu, we’ve created several online Reiki courses, carefully recorded and designed to maintain the spirit of direct transmission while offering the flexibility many people need. You can take them from home, at your own pace, and repeat the videos as often as needed. The initiation ritual, or Reiju, as it’s called in Japanese, is offered either in person in Barcelona or live via Zoom.
And even though physical distance exists, in many cases the inner experience is just as intense. In fact, many students write to us saying they felt the course as a real and profound companion during an important time in their lives.
Some people approach Reiki out of curiosity; others are drawn to it by a clear need — stress, anxiety, emotional pain, physical exhaustion. All reasons are valid.
Maybe you’re going through a period of change. Or one of those moments when everything feels like it’s speeding up and you simply need to pause. Or perhaps something within you has started whispering that there is another way of being in the world.
There is no perfect moment. But there is a true one — the moment you decide to listen and take a step toward yourself.
Whether in-person or online, our Reiki courses include:
– A clear and simple overview of Reiki’s origins and practice
– Teachings on the Gokai (the five principles)
– Energetic initiations (Reiju) that are not symbolic but experiential
– Guided practices for self-Reiki and offering Reiki to others
– Ongoing access to additional materials and our practice community
In a world that often seeks complex answers, Reiki gently reminds us of something essential: sometimes, it’s enough just to be. To place your hands with awareness. To breathe. To feel. And to allow the body to do what it knows how to do — seek balance.
This is why a Reiki course is not something you take “to add another technique” to your CV. It’s an invitation to return to what is simple. To what is human. To what is already within you.
Whether you’re able to join us in Barcelona or prefer to follow your own rhythm at home through an online Reiki course, what matters most is the inner readiness with which you arrive.
At Kisetsu, we take care of every detail so that, no matter the format, you feel accompanied, respected, and supported.
If something within you has resonated while reading these lines, perhaps it’s time to begin.
